1. The arrows here point
to successive stroma lamellae (Zea mesophyll chloroplast). In these
chloroplasts they are very crowded, and the stroma compartment consists of thin
layers sandwiched between the thylakoids.
2. The vertical arrows
alongside the label arrow point to successive granum discs in this unusually
large granum. The tips of the arrows are in the disc loculi and the dark intervening
layers are the back-to-back membranes of each neighbouring disc. The horizontal
arrows just to the right point to the curved edges of a few of the granum discs,
backing on to layers of stroma between frets.
3. The arrows point
to fret connections between stroma lamellae and granum discs.
4. These arrows point
to the curved rims of successive granum discs in the stack. Such rims are not
seen in places where the section contains the junction between a stroma lamella
and a disc (e.g. at the discs between these arrows). Compare the "special
case" - next screen.
